Cécile
Brune

494e sociétaire

Cécile Brune attended the Classe libre at the Cours Florent prior to her training at the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique by Madeleine Marion, Daniel Mesguich and Pierre Vial. In 1984, she played in Goldoni’s Bar Café directed by Raymond Acquaviva, who also directed her in Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart in 1987. Francis Huster directed her in Corneille’s Le Cid, Gildas Bourdet in Bernanos’ Les Dialogues des Carmélites, Stanislas Nordey in Pasolini’s Bêtes de style, and in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 1992, Anne Delbée directed her in Bérénice and Phèdre, both by Racine and presented at the Théâtre 14.

She became a pensionnaire of the Comédie-Française on the 19th of April 1993, and was named the 494th sociétaire on the 1st of January 1997. She made her debut as Mathurine in Molière’s Dom Juan or the Feast with the Statue by Jacques Lassalle performed first at the 1993 Festival d’Avignon. Since then, she has been a constant in comedies by Molière. She has accordingly played Elmire in Tartuffe by Dominique Pitoiset, Léonor in The School for Husbands by Thierry Hancisse, Dorimène in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Jean-Louis Benoit, Lucette in Monsieur de Pourceaugnac by Philippe Adrien, Lisette in L’Amour médecin and Le Sicilien ou l’Amour peintre by Duverger and Villégier, Toinette in The Imaginary Invalid by Claude Stratz, and Dorine in Tartuffe by Galin Stoev. Some directors prefer casting her in romantic dramas. Marcel Bluwal saw her as Louise Miller in Schiller's Intrigue and Love, Jean-Pierre Vincent as Marguerite in Nerval’s Léo Bruckart and Jean-Pierre Miquel as Araminte in Marivaux’s Les Fausses confidences.

En 1998, Jacques Rosner offered her the title role in Corneille’s Rodogune and Muriel Mayette-Holtz the role of Andromache in Racine’s eponymous play in 2011. Lukas Hemleb entrusted her with the character of Maggy Soldignac in his staging of Feydeau’s Dindon. Robert Wilson chose her to interpret the Mouse and the Goat in La Fontaine’s Fables. She performed in several plays that were directed by Denis Podalydès, including Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac and the title role in Fantasio by Alfred de Musset. Jean Liermier directed her in Les Sincères by Marivaux and then in Penthesilea by Kleist; Dan Jemmett in La Grande Magie by Eduardo de Filippo; Isabel Osthues in A Respectable Wedding by Bertolt Brecht; and Andres Lima in The Merry Wives of Windsor by Shakespeare.
In 2013, she played Meg Boles in Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party by Claude Mouriéras, Mahama in Lampedusa Way written and directed by Lina Prosa, and the Baronness in Labiche’s An Italian Straw Hat by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti.

In 2015, she reunited with Denis Marleau, who previously directed her in Seneca’s Agamemnon, to interpret Ella in Innocence by Dea Loher. She was praised for her interpretation of Bernarda in García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba as staged by Lilo Baur. Alain Françon entrusted her with the role of Louise Rafi in The Sea by Edward Bond, while Arnaud Desplechin asked her to play the Mother’s Voice in Strindberg’s The Father. Véronique Vella cast her in Marcel Aymé’s Le Cerf et le chien. Christiane Jatahy directed her in The Rules of the Game after a screenplay by Jean Renoir, Pascal Rambert cast her in his play Une vie, and Lilo Baur chose her for her staging of Après la pluie by Sergi Belbel.

In 2018, she interpreted La Plus vieille in J’étais dans ma maison et j’attendais que la pluie vienne by Jean-Luc Lagarce directed by Chloé Dabert and Mrs Bergmann in Wedekind’s Spring Awakening staged by Clément Hervieu-Léger.

She is Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres).

During the 2018/2019 season, Cécile Brune will be playing in Euripides’ Électre / Oreste by Ivo van Hove.
