Available soonAs one of the most mythical couples in the history of cinema, John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands were ideal inspirations for the first collaboration between film director Constance Meyer and Sébastien Pouderoux – who has already co-directed original productions “Comme une pierre qui...” with Marie Rémond and “Les Serge (Gainsbourg point barre)” with Stéphane Varupenne. Through the lens of two pioneers of American independent films, the duo explores the struggles pertaining to artistic production.
The play revolves around the making of A Woman Under Influence and the tumultuous relationships between those who created this famous movie, breaking away from the patriarchal society and all-powerful Hollywood industry. It portrays the genius artist Cassavetes, whose pioneer work rewarded his marginality with fame, in all his unruly, bad-faithed ways. With him, Gena Rowlands, the inventor of a modern way to act, created half-normal, half-crazy female characters whose complexity was revolutionary.
More than a biopic or hagiography, the couple’s sublime stubbornness deserved “a reflection on the links between art and conformism”, said Constance Meyer et Sébastien Pouderoux, who both see radicality and stubbornness as a source of comedy. They present a variety of viewpoints through a montage of situations featuring the couple and their friend group, including loyal actor Peter Falk, great American critic Pauline Kael, or a young intern inspired from the impassioned fans always trailing behind Cassavetes at the time. Contre is about people gnawingly trying to make art, questioning the virtues and limits of irreverence, and the gap which sometimes separates what we say, what we want and what we do.
