One of the Grimm brothers’ most popular tales, Hansel and Gretel tells how a couple decides to abandon their children in the forest so as not to succumb to famine.

But the children, who are unable to sleep because they are so hungry, overhear their parents’ conversation. Hansel has the idea of filling his pockets with pebbles to be dropped along on the way so they can find their way back. When the parents repeat their plan, the journey back is much longer. Hansel has only a piece of bread left and the crumbs he drops are eaten by birds. The alluring gingerbread house they pass on the way turns out to be the home of a witch with cannibalistic tendencies, from whom they escape thanks to cunning and helping each other.

The young director Rose Martine, a Guyanese of Haitian origin, invents a world that extends the moral of the tale written in nineteenth-century Germany by the Grimm brothers through the “para-supernatural” culture in which she grew up, where reality is populated by witches, spirits and animals. Recalling her own enjoyment of getting lost in “her” forest, she has conceived this adaptation in line with a tradition marked by orality, transmission and ritual. The key moments of the tale are embellished with Haitian nursery rhymes, Creole songs and delightful dialogues in which humour and dreams save the day. Amidst the sounds of a wild forest, the characters are accompanied by a storyteller, a tribute to the great Haitian figures Mimi Barthélémy, Jacques Stephen Alexis and Alibée Féry, who have helped to perpetuate this heritage. We can already hear the traditional opening question asked by the actor-storyteller: “Est-ce que la cour dort?”, waiting for the response “Nooooon, la cour dort pas!” that will mark the start of our two heroes’ adventures.
