In July 1924, the Olympics took place in Paris. Journalist Edmond Dehorter managed to secure a first-class spot to comment the events on the radio, the latest medium, born in 1921. He sits inside an enclosed balloon placed in the middle of the three main Olympic sites to describe the athletes’ performances out loud for the few audience members who own a listening device. By using the right words, by etching his story as he goes, by conveying his own emotions through the mere sound of his voice, he became the very first sports commentator in history. Sports anchors have been producing a compelling theatrical discourse for a hundred years. The result must be precise, intense, and formulated in a way that allows remote listeners to experience the athletes’ feats and to feel emotions akin or even surpassing that of the stadium audience. Explore the passion for sports commentary with this collection of the most memorable commentaries in history and testimonies from those who made or heard them.
