Plays that dive into characters’ inner selves rarely convey the human race’s bursting, invisible world with such a zest for life.
Je reviens de loin (I Travelled So Far) tells the story of Camille’s escape. She left her partner and two children, and came back to the place they used to live, picturing their life without her. Claudine Galea became a resident author of the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers in 2021 and of the Theatre National of Strasbourg in 2015 and is a pillar of the current drama landscape. Discover or rediscover her work and her new play directed by Laëtitia Guédon, Trois fois Ulysse (Thrice Odysseus), which will premiere in April 2024 at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier.
For her first time working with the Troupe, Sandrine Nicolas, who usually directs her own plays for the Échos Tangibles company, selected a piece she compares to a sonata, with its movements combining dialogues and inner monologues. While sustaining an extraordinary suspense, the play juggles with the past and the future, between imagination and reality, with a lone Camille on one side and the daily life of Marc, Lucie and Paul, disturbed by her absence, on the other. The director was fascinated by the effect produced by these half-real, half-phantom characters. Her set appeals to sight and sound, combining light and shadows into a single aesthetic inspired from Junichirô Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows: “We […] create a kind of beauty of the shadows we have made out in out-of-the-way places.”
