“The start and end point of the text by Giovanni Macchia, an Italian writer born in 1912 in Trani and who died in 2001 in Rome, is the enigmatic image of Molière’s only daughter, Esprit-Madeleine Poquelin, whom he had with the actress Armande Béjart, and whose entire existence was shrouded in a profound silence.
Giovanni Macchia composes a portrait of Madeleine through the fiction of an interview, offering us a highly Proustian, sentimental biography, of rare elegance, a surprising depiction of the context in which Molière produced his masterpiece.
But there are many other silences that are analysed here, those that touch on the essence of the characters in Molière’s theatre. Exposing all that has been left unsaid opens up new critical perspectives on the master of French theatre, and it took this objective stance, combined with Macchia’s loving gaze, to give so much substance and intensity to fundamental elements disguised as insignificant details. Exceptionally, Mademoiselle Molière will give this interview at the Studio-Théâtre of the Comédie-Française; the audience will have the opportunity to address her and ask her all the questions that have remained unanswered until now. She will respond according to her mood, her wishes and the incandescence of her feelings.”
