Contrarily to the implications of its title, “Le Suicidé (The Suicide)” is a jewel of burlesque comedy mixing the innerworkings of boulevard plays with philosophical dialogues, set to a backdrop of social and political issues. How does a sham end up highlighting the gruesome dispositions of a society ?
The play tells the story of a consistently unemployed loafer who mooches off his wife and mother-in-law in a Soviet Union kommunalka.
After a fight sparks off due to a sudden nocturnal craving for dried sausage, Semyon goes to the kitchen to eat, but his wife believes he is about to commit suicide and goes to a neighbour for help. Because of the dark, the neighbour mistakes the sausage for a gun. Rumours about this potential, fantasized suicide spread like wildfire and even reach social activists silenced by Stalinism. This auspicious martyr turns out to be the perfect opportunity for them to be heard, since “only a dead man can say what a live man thinks.” Armed with a hefty dose of cynicism, they all try to convince Semyon to kill himself for their respective causes.
Stéphane Varupenne is directing his first solo production, after co-directing Les Serge (Gainsbourg point barre) and Les Précieuses ridicules with Sébastien Pouderoux. He sets the story at the time when the play was written, in 1928, after the 1917 Russian Revolution and before the 1936 Great Purge. Between the rise of authoritarianism, censorship, and outrageous propaganda, he invites today’s audience to make the connections with our current world…
With Le Suicidé, the director wants to convey endless joy complete with a powerful life force: “nervous laughter, sour laughter, laughter as the polite face and shield of despair.”
