Thanks to a personal interpretation that steers clear of mimicry and a suggestive staging, Christian Gonon adds a theatrical dimension to these texts. The recurrent theme of death opens, runs through and closes a show that crackles with the quips of Desproges, who is treated as a genuine author. The audience hears excerpts from Chroniques de la haine ordinaire (Chronicles of Ordinary Hatred) broadcast on France Inter, La Minute nécessaire de Monsieur Cyclopède (The Necessary Moment of Monsieur Cyclopède) on France 3 television, as well as the book Vivons heureux en attendant la mort (Let’s Live Happily while Waiting for Death). None of the selected extracts were originally written for the stage except for one unpublished text, written for the third stand-up show Desproges was never to perform, death having caught him by surprise in the end.
