For this second master-and-servant night, the ten members of the Academy will walk the Table Theatre tightrope with Marivaux’s L’Île des esclaves (Slave Island). In this inverted comedy, masters become servants and servants become masters, allowing the author to question the social hierarchy of his time, as well as the value of education, equality, and the exercise of power. Mostly, he pushes the readers to question their own certainties and take others into account from their own viewpoint. What would be left of certitude if we were to mirror it from within other people’s eyes? This play, which premiered in 1725, raises this very matter through a process whose humour highlights the main issues that pertain to people’s ability to live together.
ONLINE THURSDAY, OCT 19 AT 8.30 P.M.
