Corneille’s comedy Le Menteur (The Liar), inspired by Spanish author Ruiz de Alarcón’s La Verdad Sospechosa, tellsthe story of Dorante, a young graduate who comes to Paris to enjoy the city and his youth. He meets two women and lies about having a brilliant military career. His fictitious stories lead to deception and misunderstandings, and the character’s imaginary universes draw the audience into the amazing world of illusion, and, consequently, of the theatre.
