Troubled by the turmoil of his passionate and confrontational relationship with George Sand, Alfred de Musset resumed writing On ne badine pas avec l’amour (Don't Fool with Love), which he had started before the couple left for Venice in 1833. The tone of this comedy on romantic misadventures varies between lightheartedness, in the way of maxims uttered in literary salons, and the seriousness of romantic dramas. The play begins as a comedy and progressively adorns the characteristics of a most contemporary tragedy. Musset’s piece draws a troubling, disturbing portrait of a restrained generation, stuck between sincerity and violence, between the sense of duty and freedom.
