  • This “childish tale”, as the author liked to call it, has been a part of children and adults’ collective memory for 250 years. Director Sophie Bricaire envisions this coming-of-age story as a tribute to love, particularly Gepetto’s love for the son miraculously coming into his life. She explained the story will be told through the old man’s perspective: “As a genius artisan, he is a powerful poetic and theatrical resource for whom creation is a wonderful path of emancipation and potentialities. Gepetto manages to create everything from nothingness; a mere piece of wood he picks up and carves becomes the starting point of an amazing adventure, a whirlwind of twists and turns, risks and disappointment, teaching the characters how to love in the process.”
In an attempt to flee the poverty of the home he’s ashamed of, and in his eagerness to see the world, Pinocchio goes through life like one crosses a field of adventure, escaping the wrath of Magiafuoco the puppeteer and the malevolent tricks cooked by the Fox and the Cat, thanks to the protective radiance of his Fairy. The scenes all exude poetry and humour, and subtly tackle the themes of family, education, peer pressure and self-acceptance. The magic pertaining to theatre making is honoured in Gepetto’s workshop, a place of wonder where everything is possible.
